Sierra Leone is a small West African country located on the Atlantic Ocean, and is bordered by Guinea to the north and Liberia to the south. The country has a population of 7,092,113 people and its capital city is Freetown. The economy is largely dependent on agriculture, with diamonds being its main export. The country also has rich deposits of iron ore and titanium which are mined for export. Sierra Leone's culture is diverse, with influences from both Africa and Europe due to its colonial history under British rule. English is the official language but Krio, an English-based creole language, is widely spoken in urban areas as well as other local languages such as Mende and Temne. The country has faced many challenges in recent years including civil war from 1991-2002 which resulted in thousands of deaths and displacement of many people within Sierra Leone itself as well as neighbouring countries such as Guinea and Liberia. Despite this difficult period Sierra Leone has made progress towards rebuilding itself with help from international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Today Sierra Leone remains one of the poorest countries in Africa but it continues to make progress towards economic growth through investment in infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges and ports which will help create jobs for locals while also improving access to markets for exports.
