The seventh century was a time of significant historical events and influential figures. In this period, the world witnessed the reign of Wamba, the Visigoth King of Hispania from 672 to 680, as depicted in a captivating portrait painting from the sixteenth century. Meanwhile, another remarkable artifact that emerged during this era was a reconstruction of helmet elements discovered in the Staffordshire Hoard. This collection of gold and silver treasures provides us with glimpses into the craftsmanship and opulence of ancient times. Amidst these worldly affairs, an even more profound transformation took place with the migration to Medina (Hijra) by Muhammad and Abu Bakr in 622. The future prophet of Islam sought refuge from persecutions in Mecca, setting forth on a journey that would shape history forever. Intriguingly, representations of Prophet Mohammed or Muhammad have been captured throughout centuries. An engraving from 1843 showcases his revered presence while shedding light on his profound impact on religious beliefs and practices. Delving deeper into intellectual pursuits during this period, we find ourselves amidst erudite scholars within Alexandria's renowned library. Sadly destroyed in 642 AD but immortalized through engravings like those from the nineteenth century, this center for knowledge symbolizes human curiosity and thirst for learning. Turning our attention back to Europe, we encounter notable individuals such as Saint Jerome, Saint Augustine (354-430), and Saint Gregoire I the Great (540-604). These esteemed figures are portrayed within miniature ivory artwork known as Diptych Boece dating back to around 487 AD – testament to their enduring influence on Christianity. Closer to home is Aldhelm, Bishop of Sherborn who lived during the eighth century. An engraving created in 1796 captures his image while reminding us of his contributions towards spreading faith and wisdom among his flock.
