Vice Admiral Read inaugurated Cadets Thanksgiving week around 1943 where gratitude was expressed towards those who served bravely during these trying times. Additionally, Newport hosted a memorable War Ships week in February 1942 which further reinforced public enthusiasm towards supporting naval forces.
