Samuel Alken, a renowned artist and creator, left an indelible mark on the world of art with his captivating works. Born in Crawley on June 1, 1790, he embarked on an excursion to Brighthelmstone that would shape his artistic journey. One of Alken's notable creations was "The Married Man, " a masterpiece that delved into the complexities of matrimony. With keen observation and skillful strokes, he captured the essence of married life like no other. Similarly, "The Bachelor" series showcased Alken's ability to depict the joys and struggles faced by single men during December 28, 1787. In October 1788, Alken unveiled "Studious Gluttons, " a thought-provoking piece that explored society's obsession with indulgence while neglecting intellectual pursuits. This work demonstrated his versatility as an artist who dared to challenge societal norms through his art. Throughout his career, Samuel Alken continued to push boundaries and experiment with various themes. His "Side Box Sketches" from June 5th, 1786 revealed glimpses into everyday life through quick sketches filled with charm and wit. Alken's talent extended beyond mere illustrations; he also excelled in capturing action-packed scenes such as "Art of Scaling" in 1792. Through this artwork, he showcased not only technical prowess but also conveyed a sense of adventure and thrill. As time passed, Alken remained attuned to society's changing mores and values. In December 1799 came "O Tempora O Mores. " - a poignant reflection on the state of affairs during those turbulent times. This creation served as both social commentary and testament to Alken's ability to capture emotions within brushstrokes. Amongst his earlier works was "Courtship in Low Life, " created on December 15th, 1785 - a vivid portrayal of love amidst the struggles of everyday life.
