The Sami people, also known as the Laplanders, have a rich cultural heritage that spans centuries. In the 18th century, they were depicted in various forms of art and exhibitions. One such portrayal is seen in the "Hab. t de la Laponie" from Playing Cards (for Quartets) Costumes des Peuples Etrangers. . 1700-1799 by an anonymous creator. During this time, a common image associated with the Sami people was that of a man and woman riding in a sledge drawn by reindeer. This traditional mode of transportation, using Rangifer tarandus or reindeer as their faithful companions, showcases their deep connection to nature and their ability to adapt to harsh environments. In 1818, another depiction emerged showcasing Mr. Bullocks Exhibition of Laplanders. This exhibition aimed to showcase the unique culture and way of life of these indigenous people. The event on February 8th allowed visitors to witness firsthand the customs and traditions followed by the Sami community. Moving forward into the early 20th century, we see glimpses into everyday life for Sami families. A photograph taken in 1914 captures a Lapp family outside their summer home on a hillside in Norway alongside their loyal sledge dog. This image highlights not only their close bond with animals but also their resourcefulness in creating homes suitable for extreme climates. Reindeer sledging remained an important aspect of Sami culture well into modern times as evidenced by a photo from c1928 showing individuals enjoying a thrilling ride through Sweden's snowy landscapes. Norway's frigid north served as home for many Sami families like those near Tromsoe captured around c1905. These images provide insight into how they adapted to survive amidst challenging conditions while maintaining strong familial bonds. Artistic representations continued throughout history; one example being SJ Beckett's work from c1930s, which showcases the Sami people against a picturesque Norwegian backdrop.
