Rorquals, scientifically known as Megaptera novaeangliae, are majestic creatures that never fail to captivate our hearts. One of their most awe-inspiring displays is when a Humpback Whale breaches the surface, soaring through the air with grace and power. Another breathtaking sight is catching a side view of these magnificent Humpback Whales, showcasing their massive size and intricate markings. But rorquals come in different species too. The Lesser Rorqual and Rudolphs Rorqual, as depicted by Thorburn's illustrations, exhibit unique characteristics that set them apart from other members of their family. Similarly, the Common Rorqual or Blue Whale leaves us in awe with its sheer enormity. The Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) also makes an appearance in Thorburn's artwork, offering us a glimpse into its world beneath the waves. A side view reveals just how streamlined and powerful this gentle giant truly is. Moving on to other species within the rorqual family, we encounter the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus). This adult fin whale surfaces gracefully in Erik Eriksenstretet during August while another one swims at the surface off Azores in June. Their elongated bodies and distinct coloration make them easily recognizable. Sei Whales (Balaenoptera borealis), another type of rorqual found swimming near Azores during June, showcase their spouting behavior as they exhale forcefully through their blowholes before diving back into depths unknown. These sightings provide valuable insights into their natural behaviors. Even after these incredible encounters with rorquals out at sea or along pebble beaches like those seen in Dorset England during February; it becomes evident why these creatures hold such fascination for researchers and nature enthusiasts alike.
