Rock Hopper is a type of penguin found in the sub-Antarctic islands of the Southern Ocean, and is one of the most well-known species of penguins due to its distinctive black and white plumage, bright red eyes, and spiky yellow crest and are known for their loud calls and energetic behavior when they come ashore to breed. They feed mainly on krill, squid, fish, and other small marine animals. Rock Hoppers form large colonies during breeding season and can be seen congregating on rocky shores or cliffsides in groups of up to thousands and are excellent swimmers with powerful flippers that allow them to dive deep into the ocean in search for food. Despite their small size they can hardy birds that can withstand extreme weather conditions such as strong winds and icy temperatures. Conservation efforts have been put in place to protect these unique creatures from threats such as climate change, overfishing, pollution, oil spills, habitat destruction and more.
