Richard Holmes was a prominent figure in the British royal family during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He witnessed significant events, such as the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales, who later became King George V and Queen Mary. A beautiful painting by WS Stuart captures their joy shortly after their wedding in 1893. Another remarkable moment depicted is the crypt under St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in 1910. This sacred place holds great historical significance for the royal family. As a patron of the arts, Richard Holmes supported various artistic endeavors. In an exquisite portrait by W&D Downey, he is shown embodying his role with grace and elegance. The bond between Richard Holmes and his wife Queen Alexandra shines through a stunning Lafayette painting from around 1908. Their love for each other radiates from every brushstroke. Tragedy struck when King Edward VII passed away in 1910. Horace Walter Nicholls captured the solemnity as his hearse entered Windsor Castle grounds, followed by Byam Shaw's poignant depiction of his funeral cortege passing through Piccadilly in London. During this time of mourning, Edward Frederick Skinner immortalized King Edward VII lying in state at Westminster Hall—an homage to a beloved monarch mourned by his people. A glimpse into Richard Holmes' private life can be seen through HN King's portrayal of Buckingham Palace's Private Chapel around 1910—a sanctuary where he sought solace amidst regal responsibilities. In Russell & Sons' intimate portrait from circa 1904, we see Richard Holmes immersed in deep thought within his study at Marlborough House—a space that witnessed many important decisions being made. But it wasn't always duty; Frederick Downer & Sons capture a lighter moment with a delightful painting depicting The Royal house party at The Grove—Lord Clarendon's residence—in July 1909. Here we witness moments of relaxation among friends and family.
