Pygoscelis is a genus of penguins that includes three species: the Adélie Penguin (P. Adeliae), the Chinstrap Penguin (P. Antarctica) and the Gentoo Penguin (P. Papua). These penguins are found in Antarctica, South America, and some sub-Antarctic islands, and are medium-sized birds with black and white plumage, short red bills, and pink feet. Pygoscelis penguins feed mainly on krill, fish, squid and other small marine animals which they catch while swimming underwater. They breed in large colonies on rocky shores or ice shelves near open water where they lay two eggs per clutch which hatch after about 35 days of incubation by both parents. Pygoscelis penguins have been studied extensively for their behavior, ecology and physiology due to their accessibility in many parts of Antarctica as well as their interesting characteristics such as cooperative breeding behavior and monogamous pair bonding. These birds are also important indicators of climate change due to their sensitivity to changes in sea ice extent which affects food availability for them as well as other predators such as leopard seals that feed on them.
