Queen Mary Ocean Liner, supplying her 1000 needs

The 'Queen Mary', then known as 'Hull Number 534', had been halted between 1931 and 1934 due to the Great Depression of the 1930s, but the merger of Cunard and White Star Line and a nine-and-a-half million pound government loan saved the vessel. Throughout Great Britian two hundred firms in sixty cities and towns had the tremendous task of fitting the 'Queen Mary' with all the necessary items to complete the ship on time, for the launch the same year in September 1934. Date: 1934

LCC-LFB Clerkenwell Emergency Tender

Clerkenwell's emergency tender with its fire crew in Proto breathing apparatus. Clerkenwell fire station was built in 1870. By 1919 self contained firefighting breathing apparatus sets were becoming available and the London Fire Brigade introduced several special tenders to provide a rapid response to serious fires where deep penetration into smoke was required. Here, Clerkenwell's breathing apparatus tender is shown with its crew and some of its specialist equipment, including an early petrol lighting generator. The Proto one-hour breathing apparatus sets used pure oxygen -- note the spare oxygen cylinders on the running board.
