Proteales is an order of flowering plants that includes four families: Proteaceae, Platanaceae, Sabiaceae, and Trochodendraceae. The order is found in tropical to temperate regions of the world and contains over 2,000 species and can characterized by their woody stems and leaves that are often leathery or scale-like in texture. They also have flowers with a single carpel (female reproductive organ) and two stamens (male reproductive organs). Proteaceae family members include the popular ornamental plants such as grevilleas, banksias, macadamias, and proteas. These plants are known for their showy flowers which can range from yellow to pink to red in color. The Platanaceae family includes the plane trees which have large leaves with distinctive veins running through them. The Sabiaceae family consists of small trees or shrubs with fragrant white flowers while the Trochodendraceae family contains only one species – Trochodendron aralioides – which is native to Japan and Korea.
