Pictorial periodic table. The periodic table shows the chemical elements ordered by atomic number (number of protons in the nucleus), but arranged in rows (periods) so that elements with similar chemistry occur in the same vertical column (group). The standard periodic table has 118 elements arranged in 18 groups and 7 periods. Here, each element is represented by its chemical symbol and an image. Above each symbol is the element's atomic number, and below it is the element's name. The lathanoids and actinoids are expanded at bottom. This periodic table uses the standard names and data published by IUPAC (the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) in 2005. Elements 113 to 118 have yet to be fully authenticated and have temporary names

Sea surface salinity, 20 January 2012 global map. The salinity (salt content) of the sea surface, used in climate models, depends on sea surface temperature and evaporation, winds, and fresh water from rivers, rain, and melting ice. The key at lower left gives the colour range in PSU (practical salinity units, equivalent to parts per thousand) from 30 (blue) to 35 (green) to 40 (red). Average salinity is 35 PSU, with the normal range from 33 to 37 PSU. The Atlantic Ocean (far right) and Mediterranean Sea (upper left) are highly saline. The Pacific (centre) and Indian (centre left) oceans are less saline. This data was acquired by the Aquarius instrument on the joint Argentine-NASA SAC-D satellite

Buckyball molecule. Conceptual computer artwork that might represent research into, or hi-tech automated production of, buckyball molecules (white sphere). Buckyballs are fullerenes, structural types (allotropes) of carbon. This one has 60 carbon atoms, which are arranged in a spherical structure consisting of interlinking hexagonal and pentagonal rings. It is thought that one day the ability of buckyballs to trap atoms (pink) within them might benefit the medical community. For example, they may be used to deliver medicines to specific tissues and cells. Buckyballs can also be used to trap metallic elements. This means scientists can fine tune a buckyball's electronic properties, which may be useful in electronic devices and circuitry
