President Grant, the 18th President of the United States, was a prominent figure in American history. During his administration in the 1870s, visitors would arrive at the White House in carriages, showcasing the elegance and grandeur of that era. The Fifteenth Amendment, ratified during Grant's presidency around 1871, marked a significant milestone for civil rights by granting African American men the right to vote. One notable event during Grant's tenure was his participation in the American Centennial Exhibition. In an engraving capturing this momentous occasion they can be seen alongside Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil as they start the impressive "Corliss" Engine in Machinery Hall. This exhibition aimed to celebrate America's achievements and progress since its founding. Another engraving depicts President Grant declaring the Exhibition open before Memorial Hall—a symbol of remembrance and honor—highlighting his role as a leader who recognized and appreciated national accomplishments. The opening ceremony itself was undoubtedly a spectacle filled with excitement and anticipation. However, not all moments were celebratory during Grant's presidency. A political scandal known as Credit Mobilier unfolded in 1873 under his watchful eye. A cartoon from that time satirically portrays this controversy which involved corruption within government contracts related to railroad construction. Amidst these events and challenges faced by his administration, glimpses into daily life behind-the-scenes are also captured through photographs such as those showing stables behind the White House or intimate moments shared between President Grant himself. President Ulysses S. Grant left an indelible mark on American history through both triumphs and trials experienced during his time in office—the grandeur of exhibitions like no other witnessed before; advancements towards equality with constitutional amendments; but also reminders that even leaders face their fair share of scandals and controversies along their journey towards progress.
