These small fish were carefully preserved and canned, providing sustenance for countless families. In the waters off Towan Head, Newquay, Cornwall in 1900, a magnificent spectacle unfolded as Long-beaked Common Dolphins feasted on a baitball school of small bait fish - including pilchards. Nature's dance played out before astonished onlookers. The importance to coastal communities is evident along the harbour wall at Polkerris, Tywardreath in 1976. This picturesque scene showcases not only fishing boats but also cannon bollards that once protected valuable catches from pirates and thieves. Jill Trounson stands proudly at the Fly pilchard cellar in Newquay during what is believed to be 1921. Her expertise ensured that these precious fish were prepared and stored meticulously for later consumption or exportation. Fish cellars stood as silent witnesses to centuries of hard work and dedication along Port Quin in St Endellion during 1969. These structures served as vital storage spaces where freshly caught they were processed before finding their way onto dinner tables far and wide. Their innovative methods helped sustain this thriving industry by increasing efficiency and productivity.
