Pierre Rubens was a Flemish Baroque painter and diplomat who is best known for his religious and mythological works. He was born in Siegen, Germany in 1577 and moved to Antwerp, Belgium at the age of 14. There he studied under the renowned artist Adam van Noort before joining the studio of Otto van Veen. Rubens quickly became one of the most sought-after artists in Europe due to his skillful use of color, dynamic composition, and ability to capture emotion through facial expressions. Rubens' paintings often featured themes from Greek mythology or Christian iconography. He also painted portraits of royalty such as King Philip IV of Spain and Marie de' Medici, Queen Mother of France. In addition to painting, Rubens served as a diplomat for both Spain and England during his lifetime. His diplomatic work allowed him access to many royal courts throughout Europe which enabled him to gain commissions from various rulers including Pope Paul V and Emperor Rudolf II. In 1630 Rubens returned home to Antwerp where he established an art academy that trained many successful painters including Anthony van Dyck who went on to become one of the most famous portraitists in history.
