"Petasus: The Symbolic Wings of Mercury and the Divine Connection" The ancient mythological figure of Mercury, known as Hermes in Greek mythology, has long been associated with various symbols that represent his multifaceted nature. One such symbol is the petasus, a wide-brimmed hat adorned with wings. This captivating accessory holds great significance and can be found depicted in various forms of art throughout history. In Juno Receives the Head of Argus, an oil painting from an unknown artist, we witness the moment when Juno receives the head of Argus from Mercury himself. Although not explicitly shown in this artwork, it is believed that Mercury would have worn his iconic petasus during this encounter. Moving on to MS Hunter 229 f. 6r Sagittarius, a page from the Hunterian Psalter dating back to around 1170, we catch a glimpse of Sagittarius wearing a petasus atop his head while holding a bow and arrow. This representation further emphasizes how widely recognized and revered this symbol was during medieval times. Fast forward to 1776 when Jean-Baptiste Pigalle created his masterpiece titled Mercury and Argus - here we see another depiction showcasing Mercury's petasus prominently placed on his head as he interacts with Argus. The attention to detail in capturing every feather adds depth to this bas-relief sculpture. Jumping ahead again to 1815, Benjamin Tanner engraves America Guided By Wisdom where we find Lady Liberty donning her own version of the petasus atop her crown. This portrayal signifies how wisdom guides nations towards progress and enlightenment under its protective wings. Throughout centuries-old marble sculptures like Mercury Attaching his Winged Sandals (1744) or Pegasus (Le Cheval de Marly) (1701-02), artists have immortalized their interpretations by sculpting intricate details into these timeless pieces; each one showcases Mercury with his petasus, symbolizing his swift and agile nature.
