Percomorphi is a large group of ray-finned fishes, which includes over 10,000 species, and are found in both freshwater and marine environments and are the most diverse group of vertebrates on Earth. Percomorphs have a wide range of body shapes and sizes, from small minnows to large barracudas. They also have an array of feeding strategies, including herbivory, carnivory, scavenging and filter-feeding. Percomorphs possess many unique adaptations that allow them to thrive in their habitats; for example they can change color to blend into their surroundings or produce toxins as a defense mechanism against predators. The percomorphi group is an important part of aquatic ecosystems as they provide food for larger animals such as birds and mammals while also controlling populations of smaller organisms like plankton through predation.
