Jonathan Hulls steamboat, 18th century

Jonathan Hulls steamboat, historical artwork. A patent for this steam-powered towboat was taken out by the British inventor Jonathan Hulls in 1736. It used a Newcomen engine to power a paddlewheel (left). However, the boat was never built as the engine was thought too cumbersome for the vessel. Image taken from Mechanics Magazine (October 1823)

George Studdy, The Faithful Heart

George Studdy, The Faithful Heart (The Sketch, 17 May 1922). A little dog with mournful eyes, obviously alarmed at his owner's sea bathing antics, paddles as far as he can into the water holding her dress, shoes and handbag which is unfortunately disgorging its contents out into the sea. Date: 1922
