Owain, the valiant Welsh knight, embarked on Madoc's Voyage to discover America long before Columbus. Later, he became known as Owen Glendower, leading rebellions against English rule. In the tales of the Knights of the Round Table, Owain, or Sir Ewaine, was a noble and chivalrous knight. In one story, a damsel brought aid to him when he was wounded, as depicted in an illustration from "A Damsel bringeth aid unto Sir Ewaine." Another illustration, "Young Owen Appeals to the King," shows him seeking mercy from King Arthur. In "Sir Ewaine poureth water on the slab," we find him performing a penance for neglecting his wife, Lady Laudine. The damsel Elose gave him a ring as a symbol of her love in the story "The Damsel Elose giveth a ring to Sir Ewaine." In "Sir Owen Greets the Lady of the Fountain," Owain's respect for women is evident. Known as Yvain the White Hands due to his pure hands, Owain's adventures continued even in the mystical realm of St. Patrick's Purgatory.
