The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most prestigious order of chivalry in Great Britain. It was founded by King Edward III in 1348 and is the highest order of knighthood in the United Kingdom, society of the most distinguished and noble individuals in the country, and its members are known as Knights and Ladies of the Garter, ceremonial order that is traditionally composed of the Sovereign, the Prince of Wales, and 24 knights. The knights are chosen from the peerage of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, and are appointed by the Sovereign, symbol of the highest honour and respect, and its members are expected to uphold the highest standards of chivalry and honour. The Order of the Garter is steeped in tradition and symbolism. The members of the Order wear a blue velvet mantle with a red velvet lining, and a garter with the motto “Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense” (“Shame on him who thinks evil of it”) embroidered in gold. The Order also has its own chapel, St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, where the members gather for the annual service of the Garter, symbol of the highest honour and respect, and its members are expected to uphold the highest standards of chivalry and honour. The Order is a reminder of the importance of upholding the values of loyalty, courage, and honour in our society.
