The Novgorod Kremlin, located in Veliky Novgorod, Russia, stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of this ancient city. As the sun sets over the majestic river Volkhov, casting a golden glow on its walls, one cannot help but be captivated by its beauty. This fortress has witnessed many significant events throughout history. From the Veche gatherings in the republic of Novgorod in 1861 and 1907, where citizens gathered to discuss important matters affecting their community, to pivotal moments like The Fall of Novgorod in 1478 - depicted vividly by artists such as Chorikov and Karamzin - these walls hold stories that echo through time. One can imagine walking through the Door of Korsun, an architectural marvel from antiquity captured beautifully in illustrations from "Antiquities of the Russian State" (1849-1853). This door leads us into a world where past meets present. As we gaze upon this grand structure from across the Volkhov River or admire it up close during our visit to Velikiy Novgorod in 1901 or even today, we are reminded of its significance. It symbolizes strength and resilience; it is a reminder that despite wars and conflicts faced by Novgorod Republic throughout centuries – including The Fall – this city continues to stand tall. The artistic renderings by Lebedev bring life to scenes like The Veche gathering or bustling activity at Novgorod Harbor. These images depict not only historical events but also capture everyday life within these fortified walls. Even though time has passed since those days when Ancient Russian Art adorned these halls or Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin's Water Tower stood proudly within its grounds (as seen in his painting from 1902), there is still an air of mystery surrounding this place. Its bell may no longer ring for assemblies held here, but its spirit remains.
