The Nez Perce, an American Indian tribe, inhabited various locations in 1715 and around 1700. Their rich cultural heritage is evident in the intricate beadwork displayed on a cradle board at the Olympia State Capitol Museum. This particular artifact, identified as PNAT2A-00011, showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the Nez Perce people. One prominent figure among the Nez Perce was Chief Joseph (1840?-1904), a respected Native American leader. A line engraving from the 19th century captures his noble visage and signifies his significance within his tribe. His legacy lives on through historical accounts such as EVNT2A-00075. Chief Joseph's final resting place can be found in Colville, Washington State. The grave serves as a reminder of his leadership and enduring spirit that inspired many generations to come. Another notable individual from this tribe is Red Thunder, who was Chief Joseph's nephew. In 1903, a toned platinum print on heavy paper captured him exuding strength and resilience. Tragically, history also recounts the sorrowful event of Chief Joseph's passing through a color lithograph titled "Death of Joseph. " This artwork depicts the mourning of not only one man but also an entire community grieving their loss. In contrast to these somber depictions stands a lithograph portrait from 1907 showcasing Chief Joseph with pride and dignity. Created by an unknown artist, it immortalizes him as a symbol of bravery and perseverance during trying times for his people. An evocative photograph taken by Cyrenius Hall in June 1878 further highlights Chief Joseph's charisma as he gazes into eternity with determination etched upon his face. Through these glimpses into their history and culture, we gain insight into the remarkable journey undertaken by the Nez Perce people – their struggles against adversity while preserving their traditions for future generations to cherish.
