Netherland is a novel by Joseph O'Neill which follows the story of Hans van den Broek, a Dutch banker who moves to New York City after his wife leaves him. He finds solace in an unlikely place: cricket. Through his involvement with the game, he meets Chuck Ramkissoon, a Trinidadian entrepreneur and cricket enthusiast. As their friendship grows, Hans discovers more about himself and his new home as he navigates the city's diverse cultures and communities. The novel explores themes of identity, belonging, loss and love as Hans comes to terms with his past and present life in America. Ultimately it is a story of hope that celebrates the power of friendship to bring people together despite their differences.
