Neepsend, a historic neighborhood in Sheffield, holds tales of industry and resilience. In the early 1900s, the Neepsend Tavern stood proudly on 144 Neepsend Lane, serving as a gathering place for locals. The area was bustling with activity as seen in the plan of lands owned by The Sheffield Gas Company in 1929. The industrial prowess is evident through advertisements from renowned manufacturers like Taylor Brothers and John Bedford and Sons. These companies produced an array of tools and equipment that contributed to Sheffield's reputation as a hub for steel production. Adelaide Works on Mowbray Street housed Taylor Brothers' saws, steel, files, machine knives, while Lion Works manufactured edge tools and engineers' hammers. However, not all moments were prosperous for Neepsend. The devastating Sheffield Flood of 1864 wreaked havoc on the area. Photographs captured the damage caused at Bacon Island where houses like The Grove suffered greatly due to the River Don dividing into two branches. Despite such setbacks, Neepsend continued to thrive over time. Sandbed Wheel held significance since its assignment by Thomas Broadbent's assignees in 1783 under Earl Surrey's ownership. Turton Bros and Matthews Ltd established their Steel, File and Spring Works on Burton Road in 1939 further contributing to Neepsend's industrial landscape. The remnants left behind by historical events are poignant reminders of past struggles endured by residents. William and Samuel Butcher's Philadelphia Steel Works faced significant damage during the Sheffield Flood; however they persevered amidst adversity. One notable structure that fell victim to the flood was James Sharman's Shuttle House - once a grand residence at Bacon Island but reduced to ruins thereafter. Throughout its history, businesses like Samuel Osborn & Co Limited at Rutland Works added vibrancy to this ever-evolving neighborhood which has witnessed both triumphs and challenges alike.
