Lud's Church, rock cleft about 100 m long and 18 m deep formed by a huge landslide, probably after the last Icw Age. It has offered shelter to various renegades including, by tradition, Robin Hood, and followers of John Wycliffe, the church reformer of the early 15th century who was held to be a heretic. A section of the chasm can hold several hundred people. Peak District, Staffordshire, England
