The Muscicapidae family is a group of passerine birds that includes Old World flycatchers, chats, thrushes, and wheatears, and are found in a variety of habitats across the world, from tropical forests to arid deserts. Most species have drab plumage with some bright colors on their wings or tails. They feed mainly on insects and other small invertebrates which they catch by sallying out from a perch or by hovering in mid-air. The family is divided into two subfamilies; the Muscicapinae which contains most of the Old World flycatchers and chats, and the Turdinae which contains thrushes and wheatears. Members of this family are known for their vocalizations; many species sing complex songs to attract mates or defend territories. Some species also engage in mimicry, imitating sounds from other animals or even human speech.
