An early, undated photograph of a smiling King George VI (1895-1952), and his wife Queen Elizabeth(the Queen Mother)(1900-2002)at Ballater railway station, Scotland. Dressed informally, with the Queen Mother sporting a cloche hat and an off the shoulder fur stole, they are accompanied by a dog on a leash, and followed by a railway worker. Ballater was the nearest railway station to Balmoral Castle, until it was then closed by the British Railways Board in 1966, as part of the "Beeching cuts".

Cheering Channel Tunnel construction workers celebrated a major breakthrough when an 800 tonne tunnel boring machine emerged at Holywell, near the Folkestone terminal site, after a 13-month, five-mile drive from the tunnel construction site at Shakespeare Cliff, near Dover.
