"Meek: A Journey through Art and Literature" In the enchanting world of art and literature, the concept of "meekness" has been explored in various forms. From Cecil Aldin's whimsical illustration of a ticked off character to Eustache Le Sueur's timeless depiction of meekness itself, we embark on a captivating journey. Julius Caesar, portrayed in vibrant colors by an unknown artist, reminds us that even great leaders can possess humility and gentleness. Albertine's painting from 1885 captures a meeting where meekness might have played a significant role – perhaps it was an encounter filled with understanding and compassion. Griselda's Sorrow, as depicted in Chaucer's Clerks Tale lithograph, showcases the strength found within meekness. Despite her hardships, Griselda remains steadfast and humble throughout her trials. Moving away from fiction into reality, we witness a scene set in a formal room featuring individuals dressed elegantly alongside what appears to be their domestic servant. This image prompts us to reflect on societal dynamics and how meekness can manifest differently depending on one's position or status. Commodore Perry's impression by a Japanese artist transports us back to 1853 when Japan opened its doors to foreign influences. Meekness may have played an essential role during this historical event as both sides navigated unfamiliar territory with respect for one another. The cattle show at Islington engraving immerses us in the bustling atmosphere of agricultural exhibitions where farmers showcase their prized livestock. Amidst all the competition lies an underlying sense of modesty among these breeders who take pride in their work yet remain unassuming about their achievements. "The Book of Thel" plate 7 teaches us that true love embraces those who are lowly or overlooked by society, and is through acts of kindness towards others that our own meekness shines forth brightly. Shifting gears to the realm of sports, we witness the Amateur Athletic Championships at Birmingham.
