The Falkland Islands, also known as the Malvinas, are a British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. The islands have been a source of dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom since 1833 when Argentina first claimed sovereignty over them. In 1982, Argentine forces invaded the islands leading to a brief but bloody war that resulted in an Argentine defeat and British victory. Since then, both countries have maintained their claims to the islands with no resolution in sight. The UK has consistently defended its right to self-determination for its citizens on the islands while Argentina has argued that it is entitled to sovereignty over them due to its historical ties with them. Despite numerous diplomatic efforts by both sides, there is still no agreement on who should control these remote yet strategically important territories.
