Luca Cambiaso, a renowned Italian artist of the 16th century, left an indelible mark on the art world with his exquisite creations. One of his notable works is "Venus and the Nymphs Lamenting the Death of Adonis, " painted between 1560-65. In this masterpiece, Cambiaso skillfully captures the sorrow and grief of Venus as she mourns the loss of her beloved Adonis. Another remarkable piece by Cambiaso is "Venus blindfolding Cupid, " an oil painting found in Fontanellato's Labirinto della Masone collection. This captivating artwork portrays Venus playfully concealing Cupid's eyes, symbolizing love's unpredictable nature. Cambiaso also showcased his talent through frescoes like "Chariot of the Sun driven by Apollo. " Painted around 1560 on Apollo Loggia's walls, these vibrant scenes depict Apollo guiding his majestic chariot across the sky. The dynamic composition and vivid colors bring life to this mythological tale. In Genoa's Duomo (St Lawrence Cathedral), visitors can admire Luca Cambiaso's religious artworks. His painting titled "Angels with episcopal insignia, books and palm branches" adorns the sacristy chapel since approximately 1580. These heavenly figures exude serenity while holding symbolic objects associated with their divine duties. Within Genoa's Baptistery lies another gem by Cambiaso: "St Benedict, St John the Baptist, and St Luke. " Created in 1562 using oil paints, this piece showcases meticulous details that highlight each saint’s distinctive attributes. One cannot miss "St Gotthard between St Paul and St James and two kneeling devotees" at Genoa’s Duomo either. Although repainted by Carlo Giuseppe Ratti later on, it still reflects Cambiaso’s original vision from 1571—a harmonious composition that pays homage to these revered figures.
