Lewis Powell, also known as Lewis Payne or Lewis Paine, was a key figure in the assassination plot against President Abraham Lincoln. Between 1855 and 1865, Powell, a former servant of Vice President Johnson, became involved in the conspiracy led by John Wilkes Booth. On April 14, 1865, the night of the assassination, Powell was assigned to attack Secretary of State Seward, but the attempt failed. He was later captured and tried, found guilty, and sentenced to death. On July 7, 1865, Powell, along with four other conspirators, was hanged in Washington D.C. This series of images depicts Powell, from his arrest in April 1865 to his execution in July, as well as the execution of the conspirators as a whole. (Images: Rev.
