The 19th century, or l'Ottocento in Italian, was a period of great cultural and political change in Italy. It saw the rise of the Risorgimento movement, which sought to unify the many states and city-states of Italy into one nation. This period also saw the emergence of a strong middle class, as well as advances in science and technology. The arts flourished during this time as well, with writers such as Alessandro Manzoni and Giuseppe Verdi creating works that are still celebrated today. The 19th century also marked a turning point for Italian politics, with the formation of a unified government under King Victor Emmanuel II in 1861. This period also saw an increase in foreign influence on Italian culture and politics, particularly from France and Britain. All these changes helped to shape modern Italy into what it is today.
