The Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, were a medieval religious and military order founded in the 11th century. Led by Grand Master Hugues de Payens, they played a significant role alongside their counterparts, the Knights Templar. One notable event was the Siege of Acre in 1291, where Guillaume de Clermont valiantly defended the city walls against enemy forces. This heroic act is depicted in an artwork by Dominique Papety. Another historical moment captured in art is Richard's encounter with the Master of St John at Joppa on July 23rd, 1191. This scene can be found in "A Chronicle of England BC 55. " Toledo's Puerta Del Sol stands as a testament to their presence even today. Although its creator remains unknown, it serves as a reminder of their influence and legacy. Unfortunately, not all encounters were victorious for these knights. They faced massacres ordered by Saladin during the 12th century. A chromolitho depicts this tragic event that shook their ranks. In more recent times, Grand Prior Thomas Docwra is immortalized through an oil painting from 1925. His leadership and dedication to his duties are evident in this piece. The order also included women who served as nuns within its monasteries like Toulouse's Knight Hospitaller monastery. These devoted individuals contributed greatly to both spiritual and practical aspects of their mission. Grand Masters held esteemed positions within the order; one such leader is portrayed here representing both Malta and Saint John's Order - truly embodying authority and respectability. Amongst various accolades awarded to members was being granted a Grand Cross status within the Order - exemplifying exceptional service and commitment to its cause. Knights donned capes while upholding chivalry under Hospitaller banner; they stood proud wearing the symbol of their order.
