Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, also known as the Kingmaker, was a formidable English nobleman and military commander in the late 15th century. With his strategic alliances and cunning political maneuvers, he played a pivotal role in shaping the English throne. Warwick's alliance with the Lancaster faction, led by Henry VI and later his queen, led to the downfall of the House of York and the brief return of the Lancaster dynasty. However, Warwick's ambition and shifting loyalties ultimately led to his own demise. In this engraving, Warwick is depicted on his deathbed after being betrayed and killed by his former ally, King Edward IV, on 14 April 1471. The portrait of Henry Stafford, Duke of Buckingham, another powerful nobleman of the time, hints at the complex web of alliances and betrayals that marked the War of the Roses. Napoleon Bonaparte, the famous French military leader, was once referred to as the 'Kingmaker of France' due to his influence over the French monarchy. Like Warwick, Napoleon's political maneuvering and military prowess shaped the course of history, albeit on a much larger scale.
