"July 1789: The Birth of a Revolution" In the midst of political turmoil and social unrest, July 1789 marked a pivotal moment in French history. The French Revolutionary Calendar, established in 1801, would forever remember this month as a turning point for the nation. The Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, became an iconic event that symbolized the people's revolt against oppression. Paintings such as "The Storming of the Bastille" by Thevenin and an anonymous artist captured the intensity and determination displayed by those who sought to dismantle tyranny. Camille Desmoulins found solace amidst chaos in the Palais Royal Gardens. This image from around 1797-1800 showcases his contemplative spirit during these tumultuous times. Meanwhile, Third Estate representatives faced exclusion from their assembly room at Hotel des Menus-Plaisirs. This act further fueled their desire for change and equality within society. As tensions escalated, Mirabeau confronted Marquis de Dreux-Breze on June 23rd, 1789. This confrontation highlighted the clash between old aristocratic power structures and emerging revolutionary ideals. Amidst all this upheaval, women played an essential role in shaping events. A painting titled "A Patriotic Women's Club" from around 1793 depicts their active participation in discussions surrounding liberty and equality. On August 4th, fear gripped France as rumors spread about counter-revolutionary plots. However, it was also during this time that significant strides were made towards dismantling feudal privileges with "The End of Ancien Régime: The Great Fear. " A model showcasing the demolished Bastille stood as a testament to newfound freedom while children took an oath to uphold revolutionary principles depicted in "Model of the Bastille: Oath of Children" circa 1793.
