Josiah Johnson Hawes: Capturing the Essence of Boston in the 1850s Step into the world Hawes, a talented photographer who immortalized Boston's history through his lens. Together with Albert Sands Southworth, they formed an iconic duo that revolutionized early photography. In their studio on Tremont Row, these Boston doctors turned photographers captured moments frozen in time. One such portrait showcases a young man donning a three-piece suit and bow tie, epitomizing the fashion trends of the 1850s. From their studio window, one could catch a glimpse down Brattle Street – an enchanting view that inspired countless works of art. It was here that Southworth & Hawes Studio stood as a testament to their artistic prowess. Hawes also had an eye for capturing beauty beyond fashion; he portrayed women with intricate hairstyles like two buns adorning their heads. In another photograph, we see Augusta Hawes at just four years old - innocence preserved forever. Not only did they focus on everyday people but also influential figures like Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose words would shape American literature forever. Their collaboration brought out her essence and strength through every frame. Venturing outside the studio walls, Hawes documented various aspects of society. The sculpture gallery at Boston Athenaeum became his canvas as he showcased its grandeur through his lens. But it wasn't just art and culture that fascinated him; political figures like Lemuel Shaw and William Henry Harrison found themselves subjects under his careful gaze. Commodore Charles Morris and Dr. John Collins Warren were among those who sat before his camera too – each portrait revealing layers of character within them. Through Josiah Johnson Hawes' photographs, we are transported back to mid-19th century Boston - where history unfolded before our eyes. His legacy lives on today as we admire these captivating images that have stood the test of time.
