Johnston is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States, and is located just north of Des Moines and is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,278. The city was named after John F. Johnston, an early settler who arrived in 1855 and established a farm near what is now Beaver Creek. Johnston has seen significant growth since its incorporation in 1969 due to its proximity to downtown Des Moines and its excellent school district. The city has become a popular residential community for those looking for easy access to downtown while still maintaining a small-town feel with plenty of parks and trails for outdoor recreation. The city also boasts several shopping centers as well as numerous restaurants and entertainment venues such as bowling alleys and movie theaters.
