Jacob Houbraken was a renowned Dutch engraver and portrait artist who lived from 1698 to 1780. His exceptional talent is evident in his various works, including the stunning portraits he created throughout his career. One of his notable pieces is the "Portrait of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel and Surrey" painted in 1733. In this masterpiece, Houbraken captures the nobleman's regal presence with meticulous detail and skillful shading. Another remarkable work by Jacobus Houbraken is the "Portrait of Charles Chais" completed in 1765. This captivating piece showcases Chais' charismatic personality through delicate lines and intricate textures. Houbraken also immortalized Jonas Witsen, Burgemeester der Stad Amsterdam, around 1749. Through this portrait, he portrays Witsen's authority as a mayor while highlighting his refined features and dignified expression. In addition to these impressive portraits, Jacobus Houbraken depicted Sidney, Earl of Godolphin, Lord High Treasurer around 1740. The artist masterfully captures Godolphin's wisdom and power through careful attention to facial details and expert use of light and shadow. Perhaps one of Houbraken's most famous works is the "William Shakespeare" portrait from 1747. This iconic depiction showcases Shakespeare's timeless genius with an air of mystery surrounding him. Apart from these well-known figures from history, Jacobus Houbraken also portrayed influential women such as Mary II (1662-94), Queen of England, Scotland, and Ireland; Mary Stuart (1542-1587), better known as Mary Queen of Scots; Louise de Savoie (1476-1531), French noblewoman and regent; Princess Mary Stuart (1631-60), Princess Royal & Countess Nassau; as well as men like Charles Spencer (1675-1722) or Sir William Temple (1628-99), an English statesman and essayist.
