Jacob de Gheyn II was a renowned Dutch artist and engraver who lived during the 16th and 17th centuries. He is best known for his intricate etchings depicting various subjects, including soldiers, archers, fortune tellers, and biblical scenes. In addition to this work, de Gheyn also collaborated with Robert Willemsz de Baudous on several series of engravings portraying soldiers in action. These include depictions of a soldier charging his musket, carrying his pike at the slope, taking aim with precision, pouring powder into the pan, and holding up his caliver. Each plate showcases different aspects of military life during that time period. De Gheyn's collaboration with Baudous highlights their shared passion for illustrating weaponry and military tactics. Their detailed engravings provide valuable insights into warfare techniques used during that era. Apart from military-themed works, de Gheyn also created pieces like "The Archer and the Milkmaid" in collaboration with Andries Stock. This charming artwork depicts an archer engaged in conversation with a milkmaid against a picturesque backdrop. Furthermore, de Gheyn contributed to Zacharias Dolendo's project called "The Four Temperaments.
