Indignation, a powerful emotion that surges within us when we witness injustice or experience disrespect and can be sparked by various situations, such as the sign hanging on the park gate saying, "You are requested to keep the Hall Doors shut on Account of the Animals in the Park. " How dare they assume our ignorance and need for reminders? The engraving titled "The Inconsiderate Waiter" also captures this sentiment perfectly. We have all encountered those who disregard our needs and treat us with disdain. The image of a woman summoned to a meeting with a School Board official due to her failure to send her son to school evokes indignation as well. Who are they to question her choices as a parent? In Le Pele-Mele's illustration from 1906, we see an expression of pure indignation painted in vibrant colors. This lithograph reminds us that anger can manifest itself in many forms and hues. Similarly, J. M Dent & Son's publication of "The Vicar of Wakefield" portrays someone flinging their emotions at another person with unbridled indignation. Moving away from engravings and lithographs, an oil painting called "The Accusation" depicts a scene where accusations fly like arrows piercing hearts filled with righteous fury. Meanwhile, "The Triple Alliance, " depicted through yet another colorful lithograph, symbolizes unity against common oppressors – fueling collective indignation. Engravings like "A Letter from a Dun" highlight how even written words can ignite feelings of outrage when demands are unjustly made upon us. On the other hand, William Hogarth's satirical print titled "When Lovely Women Stoops to Folly" reveals society's tendency towards hypocrisy and elicits indignant responses. Lastly, Bateman's humorous portrayal of "The Man Who Begged to Differ from his Mother-in-Law" shows that sometimes even familial relationships cannot escape moments of indignation.
