Avebury ring

Avebury ring, aerial photograph. The circles of standing stones and the henge (ditch) at Avebury date from about 2500 BC. The entire site encompasses some 28 acres and comprises a perimeter ditch and bank enclosing an outer circle of stones and two inner circles of stones. The ditch and bank are approximately 0.4 km in diameter. The ditch, though still clearly visible, is about a third of its original depth of 10m. Within the perimeter is a circle of Sarsen stones, which have survived best on the western (left) half. Within the outer circle of stone were two smaller stone circles, one to the north and one to the south of the site, now separated by a road. The ring in the southern half has survived best. The site is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site. Photographed in Avebury, Wiltshire, UK

Composite image of star trails over Stonehenge

Stonehenge. Composite image of star trails over the silhouetted stones of Stonehenge. Stonehenge is a prehistoric site comprised of four rings of standing stones in Wiltshire, UK. It is thought that Stonehenge was used to make astronomical obs- ervations. The site was built in several stages, beginning over 5000 years ago. The largest stones stand over 7 m high and weigh 40 tonnes. Star trails occur because of the apparent motion of the stars through the sky due to the rotation of the Earth about its axis. In the northern hemisphere the star trails form concentric circles centred on the Earth's North Celestial Pole (lower centre), which lies directly above the Earth's North Pole

Claude Bernard, French physiologist

Claude Bernard (1813-1878), French physiologist and pioneer of experimental medicine and physiological chemistry. Bernard's discoveries were wide-ranging, and many depended on his skill in vivisection, using mainly dogs and rabbits. Bernard was the founder of the principle of the internal environment, the ability of animals to regulate their internal temperature, acidity and osmotic pressure. This concept was later expanded by Cannon as homeostasis'. Bernard also described the liver's function in regulating blood sugar levels, and the preferential affinity of haemoglobin to oxygen and carbon monoxide, rather than carbon dioxide. Engraving from "Les Savants Modernes" (1899)
