Henry VIII was the King of England from 1509 to 1547. He is best known for his six marriages, and his role in the English Reformation which changed the course of religious and political life in England. Henry VIII was born on 28 June 1491 at Greenwich Palace, London. His father was King Henry VII and his mother was Elizabeth of York. He had three siblings: Arthur, Margaret and Mary. Henry VIII became king at age 17 after the death of his father in 1509. During his reign he married six times; Catherine of Aragon (1509–1533), Anne Boleyn (1533–1536), Jane Seymour (1536–1537), Anne of Cleves (1540–1541), Catherine Howard (1542–1543) and Catherine Parr (1543– 1547). His most famous marriage is with Anne Boleyn as it resulted in a major split from Rome when Pope Clement VII refused to annul their marriage; this led to the formation of the Church Of England with Henry as its head instead of the Pope. In addition to this, he also passed several laws that gave him more power over Parliament, abolished monasteries and confiscated their lands for himself, increased taxes on foreign merchants trading in England, declared war on Scotland and France among other things.
