Doctor examining MRI scans

MODEL RELEASED. Doctor examining MRI scans. The scans are sagittal (vertical and sideways) sections through a patient's head. The scans have revealed the internal structure of the patient's brain, allowing the doctor to assess the health of the patient. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans are obtained using radio waves and a powerful magnet, and allow doctors to examine soft body tissues

Head lice examination

MODEL RELEASED. Head lice examination. Doctor checking a six year old girl for head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis). Head lice measure 2-3 millimetres in length. They live in the hair of the head and suck blood from the scalp, causing intense itching. The itching provokes scratching, which can lead to scalp inflammation or dermatitis. Nits are the tiny eggs laid by head lice which are glued to hairs close to the scalp. Treatment is with medicated shampoo

Galvani Luigi Featured Image

Galvani Luigi

Luigi Galvani (1737-1798), Italian anatomist. Galvani noticed that dead frogs twitched when included in a circuit with metals. This led him to propose a new form of electricity ("animal electricity"). He believed, however, that this was generated by the nerve and muscle tissue in the dead frog. This was later shown to be false by Volta in 1800, who showed that the current was generated by the metals. The galvanometer, used to detect electric current, is named after Galvani, as is the process of galvanisation
