LCC-LFB Massey Shaw fireboat at Blackfriars

The Massey Shaw was built in 1935 by the J Samuel White company at Cowes, Isle of Wight. She was built to a London County Council design, and cost around £18, 000 to build. The vessel was named after Eyre Massey Shaw, a former chief of the London Fire Brigade. Seen here is the Massey Shaw laying off her moorings (river station) at Blackfriars on the Victoria Embankment. Alarm Buoy, 1858

Engraving showing an alarm, or marker, buoy designed by Brown, Lenox and Company of Millwall, 1858. This buoy featured a water-wheel in its centre which, through the motion of the water, rang the bell at the top of the buoy. Mr. Lenox believed that his design was an improvement over previous designs as the bell would still ring during the flat calms often associated with foggy days
