The flycatcher is a small bird that can be found in many parts of the world and has a distinctive call and is known for its ability to catch flies in mid-air. The flycatcher's diet consists mainly of insects, such as flies, beetles, moths and mosquitoes. It also eats some fruit and seeds when available, and are usually found near water sources or open fields where they can find plenty of food. They build their nests in trees or shrubs close to the ground, often near human dwellings. The male flycatcher is brightly coloured with a black head and white throat patch while the female is duller with an olive green back and yellowish belly. Both sexes have long tails which they use for balance when hunting for food on the wing or perching on branches, and are important predators that help keep insect populations under control in their habitats, making them beneficial to humans as well as other species living nearby.
