The First Carlist War was a bloody conflict that took place in Spain from 1833 to 1840, sparked by a dispute over the succession to the Spanish throne. The war pitted supporters of Carlos V, known as Carlists, against supporters of Queen Isabella II. It was marked by fierce battles and brutal atrocities on both sides. The Carlists were traditionalists who believed in the divine right of kings and wanted Carlos V to take the throne instead of Isabella II, who they saw as illegitimate. They were supported by conservative factions within Spain and received aid from France and Portugal. The war devastated large parts of northern Spain, with cities like Bilbao and San Sebastián being heavily damaged. Both sides committed atrocities against civilians, including massacres and forced conscription. Ultimately, the war ended in a victory for Isabella II's forces, but it left deep scars on Spanish society that would last for generations. The First Carlist War set the stage for future conflicts in Spain and highlighted the deep divisions within Spanish society over issues of monarchy, religion, and politics.
