Disc harrowing, Lincolnshire AA98_09683

Disc harrowing near Honington, Lincolnshire. The mechanisation of agricultural practices made farming more intensive and productive, although tractors were often used in conjunction with horses rather than instead of them. Here traditional methods rub shoulders with newer technology. In the distance is Normanton Hill, known as the Lincolnshire Cliff. Photographed by Hallam Ashley in October 1940

Halwill Barton, Lesnewth, Cornwall. 1961

A general view of the early 17th century Grade II listed house. The house name original spelling was Halwill, as is reflected on a granite stone at the entrance to the drive. However the O/S maps spelling of the house is Halwell. Photographer: Charles Woolf

Harvesting at Trenance BB98_06122 Featured Print

Harvesting at Trenance BB98_06122

Mr Richard Harvey and workers harvesting at Trenance, Mullion, Cornwall, 1900-€“1. Alfred Newton & Son. Silver gelatin glass plate negative. This image has captured distinct and somewhat incongruous elements. Traditional intergenerational farming forms the main subject, but the distant Marconi Signal Station is a symbol of modernity. The Poldhu Hotel, built to house Marconi workers, can be seen behind the signal station
