"Ermes: The Divine Messenger in Art" Ermes, also known as Mercury, is a prominent figure in various artistic representations throughout history. One such depiction is the "Sitting Mercury" sculpture from the IV century BC, crafted in bronze. This ancient masterpiece showcases Ermes' iconic pose and serves as a testament to his importance. Moving forward to the 18th century, we encounter stunning frescoes that capture Ermes' presence within different rooms of the Palazzina (Small Building). In the Room of Olympus, we find a fresco titled "Mercury, " painted in 1757. Here, Ermes stands tall amidst other gods and goddesses, emphasizing his role as an intermediary between mortals and deities. Continuing our exploration within this magnificent building's third room or room of the Aeneid, we discover multiple depictions of Ermes. In one fresco named "Aeneas dreams of Mercury who orders him to leave, " created by artist Ermes Visconti in 1756-57, we witness an intense moment where Ermes delivers divine instructions to Aeneas through a dream. Another monochrome fresco representing Mercury can be found within this same room. Its creation during the same period adds further depth to our understanding of how artists sought to portray this godly messenger. As we venture into The Hall of Liberal Arts and Planets within Palazzina (Small Building), another captivating scene unfolds before us. In a detailed section from yet another fresco entitled "Aeneas introduces Eros to Didone in the likeness of Ascanius, " completed between 1756-57; it becomes evident that even love itself requires intervention from none other than Hermes himself. The significance placed on depicting these interactions with Hermes highlights his essential role not only as a messenger but also as an influential force shaping destiny and relationships among both mortals and immortals.
