Elizabeth Wydville, also known as Elizabeth Woodville, was a prominent figure during the reign of King Edward IV in 15th-century England. She first caught the king's attention when they met under an oak tree, and their love story became legendary. Despite being a commoner and widow with two sons, Lady Elizabeth Grey managed to captivate Edward's heart. In 1464, artist James William Edmund Doyle depicted the couple in a painting titled "Edward IV and Lady Elizabeth Grey. " This artwork immortalizes their union and showcases their deep affection for one another. However, not all was smooth sailing for Elizabeth. In 1461, she had to petition Edward IV to restore her lands after her husband's death. An unknown artist captured this moment in a painting from 1783 called "Lady Elizabeth Grey Petitioning Edward IV To Restore Her Lands. " It highlights her determination and resilience. Elizabeth faced further challenges when Richard Duke of Gloucester accused her of witchcraft in 1773. This accusation is portrayed in another artwork from that year by an unknown creator titled "Richard Duke of Gloucester Accusing the Queen of Edward IV with Witchcraft. " Despite these trials, Queen Elizabeth remained steadfast. A portrait dating back to c1441-1689 shows her regal presence even during turbulent times. The meeting between Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville is beautifully illustrated by John Leech in his artwork capturing this significant encounter between royalty and commoner. Tragedy struck when Queen Dowager parted ways with her son, the Duke of York in 1483 as depicted by an artist named Unknown in his work from 1793 titled "The Queen Dowager of Edward IV Parting With Her Son. " Another piece from that same year portrays both Elizabeth Woodville and Jane Shore being accused by Richard Duke of Gloucester. The painting emphasizes their strength amidst adversity.
