Thomas the Apostle, also known as Doubting Thomas, was a disciple of Jesus, famously depicted in art as questioning the resurrected Christ's wounds in scenes like the "Incredulity of St. Thomas" (1602-03). In this woodcut by Thomas Hill (c. 1571), Thomas appears more relaxed, enjoying nature's beauty in an arbour. Yet, his past doubts are not forgotten. In another scene from the Life of Christ, the Syon Cope's detail shows Jesus revealing his wounds to the disciples. Thomas's journey of faith is echoed in the story of St. Theodora and Didymus, who were martyred together and depicted in art as being liberated by their holy deaths. Exotic beetles, like those found in nature, remind us of the intricacies and wonders of the world, much like the complexities of faith and doubt. Thomas's story serves as a reminder that even those with doubts can find faith and redemption.
